Details of Experience:
George is a 78- year-old male who was admitted to our community on 6/14/17 to recover from his second coronary artery bypass graft (CABG). He had the first one in January of this year and his second three months later. George also had a diagnosis of acute respiratory failure. George came to us on continuous 4 L supplemental oxygen via nasal cannula.
He had extremely low exercise tolerance for any activity/exercise. He was unable to do a simple chair transfer without having heavy shortness of breath and a decrease in oxygen levels. George was unable to walk more than three-four feet without needing to sit and break for three-five minutes before beginning again.
Progress was very slow due to George’s compromised cardiac and respiratory status. As therapy continued in the upcoming weeks ahead, he showed inconsistent progress. Slowly as the next month-and-a-half followed, therapy began making consistent progress with him. His breathing pattern improved, he was able to begin oxygen weaning, and his exercise tolerance increased. Toward his last couple of weeks in our community, therapy was able to complete stretches of the day on room air and eventually, he was able to get to reach the point where he could last the entire day on room air!
George had a lot of encouraging support from his family, especially his wife. She was always at the community to help him. Therapy also educated his wife to assist in making the transition back home a successful one. We all wish him a safe return back home!
